What next, now that the CFE report is out?
Now that the Committee on the Future Economy (CFE) report has been released, Singapore's leaders have to look at the proposals, and take Singaporeans with them.
Perhaps, the first step that needs to be taken is to explain the seven key strategies in layman's terms, so that more Singaporeans can better understand what they mean, and more importantly, how they can play their part in ensuring the continued success and survival of Singapore.
Business leaders, too, should sit up and take note. They need to learn, un-learn and re-learn the skills required to guide their businesses through largely uncharted waters. They should not think that it is only their workers who need retraining. Among other skills, business leaders would have to acquire leadership skills to lead two widely diverse groups of workers - the mature and the millennials. This also applies to our ministers and governmental officials.
The focus must continue to be on better utilisation of our pool of human resources, in particular the mature workers. The work of the 30-member committee is not quite done, and the team must not be disbanded. They should continue with ground consultations and do a periodic review of the recommendations, simply because of the pace and intensity of change that we are faced with in the world.
Ten years is too long a period to do meaningful and practical planning in this day and age.
